Studying Chinese in Yangshuo

Yangshuo is visited by people from around the world and has a very multi-cultural feel. You can study Chinese while visiting some historical relics and scenic attractions, countryside and local people's families. The courses will make your vacation a pleasant, meaningful and unforgettable experience. It is an ideal place to combine study with travel.

The courses focus mainly on listening and speaking. Those that desire it, especially long-term students, can of course chose to learn how to read and write Chinese as well. Learners' personality traits and varied needs will be taken into consideration while planning your lessons. Depending on which type of course you choose, Janie will take learners to practice Chinese with local people after the lessons in a day or give you short homework to encourage you to study and practice by yourself.

It is important for Janie to be able to devote herself to her students, and give them her full attention during the lessons. Students with a positive learning attitude will benefit immeasurably and gain a valuable and unique insight into Chinese culture through the Chinese language. It's an educational journey that's stimulating and enriching!

Free introduction lesson

Get a feel for Janie's personality and way of teaching, before deciding. It is not as much a real lesson as an introduction, of course. It allows Janie to get a feel for your level, your needs and wants, to help her plan your course.

Meeting a potential teacher reveals their level of education, respect and skill in an instant, and is a huge help for many potential students who might be new to adventures like this.
Nothing helps you beat procrastination with Mandarin learning as much as meeting Janie and discussing Mandarin!

For those of you who are new to Hong Kong or haven't arrived yet, a Skype introduction lesson can of course be organised as well.
Before coming to China, especially if it is your first time, it can be reassuring for you to not just talk with your teacher by e-mail, but also get to know one more friendly person even before landing.

Business Mandarin course

If you are keen to learn business-oriented Mandarin sentence structures, reading and formal writing, as well as the business culture and manners that should go with it, our Business Mandarin course is just right for you.

For those who do business in China, they will get a lot out of the extra lessons on Chinese business culture and manners.

Survival Chinese course

The Surival Chinese Course focuses on effective communication. It's specially designed for tourists who might not have a lot of time to study Chinese and wish to quickly grab some useful Chinese expressions for traveling.

Intensive Mandarin Chinese course

The intensive immersion course is well-suited for people who want to study Chinese seriously and devote enough energy to it. The course focuses on effective communication, not rote learning. Your personality traits and varied needs will be taken into consideration when choosing a textbook and planning the private lessons and teaching schedule with Janie. You can choose to learn only spoken Chinese or learn the written language as well.

Group lessons

Janie also organizes group lessons, for 2 to 5 people.

Groups are for students with similar levels only, and are organized as soon as a student has been able to motivate a friend or contact.

Note that after a few weeks or months, most students' skill levels will diverge. Many choose then to continue with private lessons, or complement their group lessons with private 1-on-1 lessons to catch up. So know that this situation is normal, epxected, and not a problem for anyone.

Lesson fees

I don't like to advertise my pricing online. Be assured that pricing is fixed for all students and depending on the size of the class (1, 2-3, 4+).

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with Janie by email.
My pricing is more affordable than what institutes and language schools offer, while providing the highest quality and flexibility possible.

Outdoor practice in Hong Kong,
Shenzhen, Guangzhou or Yangshuo

As you most likely know, in Hong Kong not that many speak Mandarin. (Though recently more and more locals learn and improve their Mandarin.) It is therefore possible, but not so easy, to practice your Mandarin conversation skills in Hong Kong.

Live practice is the best way to remember what you've learned, improve your skills and acquire (little by little :) the feel of the language.
When Janie was teaching in Yangshuo, one of China's biggest tourist spots, finding people to practice with who had both time and a proper accent was very easy.

This is why Janie offers her students the possibility to go on city trips in small groups, either in Guangzhou or Shenzhen, or Yangshuo and Guilin.
Shopping in the market, eating with Chinese tourists or locals, visiting attractions...
Visiting scenic areas during weekends or cycling in the country side,
meeting farmers in their fields and children along the road,
practicing your negotiation skills in the shopping streets or small street markets...
Plenty of ways in which Janie will help you improve your confidence.
